Birds, weather and other preoccupations from the west of Ireland.
Where
it is
Cloughbrack, An Chloch Bhreac, the speckled rock, is a townland in Joyce Country in the north of Co. Galway, close enough to the Mayo border. It sits between Mount Gable and Lough Mask, on limestone and bog, with Lough Corrib away to the south. Clonbur is the nearest village, a couple of kilometres down the road. This page ties together the small sites running on the network here: the birds, the weather, and whatever else has ended up needing somewhere to live.
A bit of history The townland was split into Upper, Middle and Lower. In the seventeenth century this was O'Flaherty ground, before it changed hands around the time of the Down Survey. One corner of it picked up the name Baile Mheiriceá, America, for the number of people who left from it, and the money that came back.
Older stories Mount Gable stands over the village, and the story goes that the Firbolg gathered there before Moytura, below at Cong. There are fairy paths across the hills as well, and lone hawthorns left standing in fields that were otherwise cleared long ago. I make no claims. I just leave them alone.
